...champagne on 2007 election night.

Manuela Michailescu was born on May 25, 1950 in Bucharest, Romania. Living under a dictatorship for 30 years helped her develop special "sensors" for propaganda, censorship, and control freaks.

She escaped from Communist Romania in 1980 – and was granted political asylum by the United States government. She moved to Ulster County in 2001.

Manuela has a Master of Arts in Theater and Film Critique and a Master of Business Administration with a major in Marketing / Advertising from Baruch College, City University of New York. She won the First Prize Award in the 1987 Philip Morris Marketing / Communications competition.

For over 20 years she has been the president of the board of directors of Kent Victoria Apartments, Inc., and co-owner / Vice President of Point Blank Inc., an advertising agency specializing in tourism marketing. In these roles she manages corporate and clients' budgets. She is co-owner of Old Brick House Antiques on Route 209 in Kerhonkson.

Manuela is a member of the Ulster County Tourism Advisory Board, Accord-Kerhonkson Chamber of Commerce, Rochester Republican Club, Friends of Historic Rochester, Society for the Preservation of Hudson Valley Vernacular Architecture, and Antiques Dealers Association of Ulster County.

Always involved and ready to serve her community, a record-holder of meetings attendance, Manuela was elected Councilwoman in the Town of Rochester with 62% of the vote in 2007 (she entered politics at 57 as a result of her successful fight to reveal the truth behind a scandal created by a rumor). Manuela is proud to have helped establish the open interviews policy, an option chosen by the overwhelming majority of candidates coming in front of the current Rochester Town Board.

She is equally proud of her activity as a Town Board member, from paying attention to details to always following up on projects, related but not limited to her activity as liaison to the Historic Preservation Commission and Youth Commission. She enjoys attending town events, Chamber of Commerce meetings and activities which keep her connected to the people.

She has been involved with County issues for over 3 years, as a very active member of the Ulster County Tourism Advisory Board. As tourism is the County’s main revenue-generating sector, fighting for an effective tourism marketing approach, from branding to budgeting and communication, is critical. Manuela realized that she can better make a difference and serve the community by applying her marketing expertise at the County level.

Manuela has the personal, political and professional qualifications to serve as Legislator. She is a proven winner. She speaks truth to power, fights for principles (as people's right to choose when they vote) and for the right issues. Elected as District 1 Legislator, Manuela will be a fresh, but very strong voice for her constituency.
